A-Head Start Summer Program

Dates:   August 23-27, 2010

Location:   RND
No Cost and A Snack and A Drink are provided everyday.
Transportation  is parents’ responsibility.

This program provides numeracy and literacy lessons to give incoming RND students a headstart.  Often over the summer holidays students tend to forget some things they have learned.   The numeracy classes will refresh basic numeracy skills from grade 8 and strengthen the students’ math skills by providing instruction of a few grade 9 math topics.  The literacy classes will provide valuable literacy skills to improve student success in reading comprehension, note-taking, and basic writing skills.  Along with excellent instruction in the classes, we have RND students to tutor your son/daughter individually in the classroom.  There are no grades or tests.  The program simply endeavors to instruct and to provide learning opportunities for RND’s new students.  Practice at home is encouraged.

Through fun orientation activities this program has been very effective in reducing the anxiety that new students experience when entering high school.  High school students lead the incoming Panthers in scavenger hunts, math games, and breaks where students are allowed to participate in table tennis, volleyball, or soccer and have time to make new friendships.  Many new friendships are started here that will help students see familiar faces in those first few weeks of high school.    Students also become familiar with rotating between classes according to a timetable.  This is something that many of the students have never experienced in elementary school.   Although the school uniform is not required at this time, appropriate school attire is expected each day.

All classes start in the morning.  The student's timetable will be sent home by the third week of July.  A follow-up phone call a week before classes begin will remind parents of the classroom number and start time.  The student’s day lasts 5 hours including a ½ hour lunch break.  Class starts are staggered in order to accommodate the large number of students that usually attend.   The earliest classes start at 8:30 a.m. and the latest start is at 9:30 a.m.  Students are to leave school once their classes have finished each day because the school closes early during the summer.  Attendance is taken everyday and parents will be notified when a student is absent.

Registration:   By May 12th, all eighth graders registered at RND will have received information letters and registration forms.  Since this program has become very popular a placement cannot be guaranteed after June 15, 2010.  If the registration form is misplaced, on-line registration is available or the form can be downloaded here.

Feeder schools:  Students registered to attend RND will receive their information packet from their eighth grade teacher.  Registration forms must be returned to the feeder school by May 21, 2010.

Non-feeder schools:  Students from non-feeder schools will have their information packet mailed directly to their homes.  Registration forms must be delivered to RND or post-marked by May 28, 2010 to guarantee a placement.
